Republican presidential candidates have not won California since Bush’s father, George Bush, took it in 1988 and in an indication of the difficulty he faces here, the president was paying his first visit to the state since March. His campaign also has not been spending much on advertising in the state.
California holds 55 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election, the most of any state. Polls give Kerry a double-digit lead and the Bush campaign is hoping Schwarzenegger can give him a boost.
