Republican victories in Democratic-held seats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana assured the party of at least 52 seats when Congress’s upper house convenes on January 3.
Prior to the ballot, the Republicans had a 51-48 seat control of the Senate, and have gained at least one seats. Outcomes were still uncertain in Florida, Alaska and South Dakota, where the Democrats’ leader in the Senate, Tom Daschle, was fighting for his political survival.
