The treaty on limiting the spread of nuclear weapons is outdated and needs revision, the UN’s secretary general has said at a meeting in New York.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty “has not kept pace with the march of technology and globalisation,” Kofi Annan told delegates from 187 states.
He also called upon former Cold War rivals Russia and the US to seriously reduce their current nuclear arsenals.
He made the comments as he opened a month-long review of the 1970 treaty.
It was designed to stop the spread of weapons, achieve nuclear disarmament and promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
